They are issued by ISO (International Standards Organization) who provides guidelines for the industry. The calculation takes into account the natural ingredient content as well as the derived natural ingredient content. Derived natural ingredients are cosmetic ingredients of greater than 50% natural origin, by molecular weight, by renewable carbon content, or by any other relevant methods, obtained through defined chemical and/or biological processes with the intention of chemical modification. Example: Bio-sourced butyl acetate is obtained by fermentation of sugar cane or cassava to create butanol which is then esterified by acetic acid to produce 100% bio-based butyl acetate. The butyl acetate is 100% bio-sourced and 100% natural origin.
